Newcastle vs Arsenal Preview

The big games keep coming in the Premier League as Newcastle host Arsenal in Matchday 10’s early kick-off.

The home side have had the definition of a mixed start to their campaign. Of their nine league games so far, they have won three, drawn three and lost three, experiencing all the ups and downs of a season in this small sample size. As suggested by their record, Newcastle find themselves in mid-table, slightly under performing expectations as they try to repeat their successful 2022-23, when they qualified for the Champions League by finishing fourth.

The Magpies are without a win in their last five Premier League outings, so there are obvious concerns about their current trajectory, but hope, if you look hard enough, can be found in the fact that run included a respectable draw with Manchester City.

Overall, the performances of Eddie Howe’s team have not been terrible, but a spell without Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson predictably curbed their goal-scoring threat.

Newcastle head into this game after back-to-back meetings with Chelsea, losing the league fixture 2-1 at Stamford Bridge before responding with a 2-0 victory in the Carabao Cup tie at St James’.

It is difficult to distinguish whether the noise around Arsenal is positive or negative at present. Some have felt underwhelmed by the early season showings, citing a lack of attacking verve as the primary reason. Meanwhile, some are more considered in their assessment, showing an understanding for circumstances that have seen them without captain and creative hub Martin Odegaard for extended periods, while also suffering multiple injuries throughout their defensive line.

This was perhaps most notable last weekend in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool, when they ended the match with a back four of Thomas Partey, Ben White, Jakub Kiwior and 18-year-old Myles Lewis Skelly – conceding late to a customary Mohamed Salah goal.

Another consideration is Arsenal’s early season fixture list – within the first 10 games of the Premier League season, they would have already gone away to North London rivals Tottenham, champions City, and last season’s fourth-placed Aston Villa all without losing. Add to that Liverpool at home and the forthcoming trip to Newcastle and that is a lot of big fixtures already traversed, possibly without defeat.

Despite all of this, Arsenal are just four points behind Liverpool, and five behind City, with a large chunk of the season remaining to potentially close that gap.

Newcastle vs Arsenal Betting Tips

Total Goals – Under 2.5 @ 1.92

Games between these two are usually very tight, with the previous meeting’s 4-1 Arsenal win being something of an outlier. We do not expect a bucketload of goals this time around either.

Both Teams To Score – No @ 2.05

Newcastle have only netted nine times in their nine games, so needing them to get a goal, even against a potentially make-shift Arsenal defence, could be too much.

Race to 5 Corners – Arsenal @ 1.76

Everyone knows about Arsenal’s success at turning corners into goals, so if you think they will get to five before Newcastle do, this might be of interest.
