Arsenal vs Liverpool Preview

Arsenal come into this tough fixture surrounded by the negativity of their first defeat of the season, suffered last weekend away at Bournemouth. The circumstances surrounding the loss were familiar – reduced to 10-men for a significant portion of the game, with William Saliba seeing red on this occasion.

There was a bit of debate around the validity of the red card, but ultimately it was bad decision making from the Arsenal players, not the match officials, that cost them. They picked themselves up enough to grab a narrow 1-0 home win against Shakhtar in the Champions League on Tuesday, but Liverpool will certainly prove a much sterner test.

The aforementioned sense of negativity currently lingering around the Arsenal fanbase can be attributed mostly to the injury concerns affecting the squad. They could potentially be without seven first-team players on Sunday, including the likes of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori, but it also presents an opportunity for other members of the squad to show their worth. With all the hardship the squad has faced already this season, can they put in another big performance?

Conversely, it has seemed relatively simple for Liverpool so far, with Arne Slot enjoying his first season with the club. They have been in terrific form, winning 11 out of 12 matches in all competitions, adjusting brilliantly to life after legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

This has put them top of the league, a point clear of City, as well as second in the Champions League – League Phase table. Despite talk of key players such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold intending to leave upon the expiry of their contracts in 2025, it has not affected the team’s on-pitch performance.

Regardless of their amazing start to the season, Liverpool are without a Premier League win against Arsenal since 2022, with two draws and two defeats in the intervening period. This recent record should give the Arsenal players confidence, especially when you consider those two wins have come when playing at the Emirates.
