US Open 2025: Tournament Preview

The men’s draw looks explosive. World No.1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner has plenty at stake. The 24-year-old Italian is still recovering from an illness that forced him to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters final.

His usual rival, Carlos Alcaraz, is determined to reclaim the world No.1 ranking from the Italian. The Spaniard closed the gap by lifting the Cincinnati Masters trophy after Sinner’s aforementioned withdrawal.

With only 1,890 points separating them, whoever goes further at the US Open will surely secure the top spot. If both are knocked out at the same stage, the 22-year-old Spaniard will regain the throne.

Also lurking is Novak Djokovic, possibly playing one of his last US Opens, along with Danish prodigy Holger Rune, who is still chasing his maiden Grand Slam title.

For the home crowd, Ben Shelton—fresh off his title in Montreal—and Taylor Fritz are the players to watch, both aiming for deep runs in New York.

On the women’s side, fans can expect some blockbuster matches as well. Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is eager to confirm her dominance on hard courts after another season packed with Grand Slam finals.

Iga Swiatek, newly crowned Wimbledon champion, arrives brimming with confidence and looking to add another major trophy to her collection.

Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, also claimed the French Open in June but has since lost three of her last five matches, including a first-round exit at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old American remains hugely popular in New York and will rely on home support in her quest for a second US Open title.

Another emotional storyline is the return of Venus Williams, competing at Flushing Meadows thanks to a wild card. Her presence adds a special touch to this year’s edition.
