World Darts Championship Preview
The World Darts Championship is always a lively and highly anticipated event, which fans enjoy as much as the players involved. It marks the close of one year and the start of another with unforgettable matches, and this year promises no less excitement as fans eagerly await another showdown among the sport’s biggest names.
The current holder of the World Darts Championship title is, of course, Luke ‘Cool Hand Luke’ Humphries, who will look to build on a fantastic year that has seen him achieve victories at the World Matchplay, Players Championship 26, the New Zealand Masters and the PDC World Cup of Darts, where he represented England with Michael Smith.
As if this wasn’t already impressive enough, Humphries also managed deep runs in events that included finishing runner-up in the World Grand Prix, the UK Open, and Premier League Darts. The past couple of years have consolidated Humphries credentials as one of the top players, putting him among the favourites for any competition in which he competes.
Perhaps the main challenger to Humphries title is his namesake Luke Littler, who was beaten in last year’s final at just 16 years of age. Since then, Littler has had a sensational rise in the world of darts, with his performance in 2024 putting him among the genuine contenders to win the World Darts Championship.
He emerged victorious in the World Series of Darts Finals by defeating Smith and captured titles at the Bahrain Masters and Poland Masters. The teenager also avenged his World Darts Championship loss to Humphries by beating him to the Premier League Darts title, adding to an outstanding resume for one so young.
The Belgian interest in this year’s competition comes from Dimitri Van den Bergh and Mike De Decker. According to our experts, Van den Bergh has the least realistic chance of these Belgian players winning the tournament, with odds of 66.00 to emerge as the victor. However, he is the only Belgian participating that has a major tournament to his name, winning the World Matchplay in 2020.
De Decker is a real outsider to win the event after recently triumphing at the World Grand Prix, his first major title secured with a final win over Humphries. This is why we have him at 23.00 to win the whole thing. And, of course, there is Kim Huybrechts, who is rightly considered a pioneer of Belgian darts and has paved the way for all those that have come after him. Despite his vast experience, he’s being viewed as a huge outsider, with a pre-tournament price of 501.00.
As the start of the World Darts Championship approaches, form in the PDC’s top events could offer critical insights into who will emerge victorious. While Humphries and Littler are the clear frontrunners, the unpredictable nature of darts ensures there is always room for surprises.
