Genk are aiming to stay atop of the Jupiler Pro League as they take on Mechelen. The meeting between these two teams in September ended in a 2-1 win for Genk, and they’ll be hoping for something similar as they look to see off a late title charge from Club Brugge.
Mechelen have found themselves in mid-table this season, which is a familiar setting for the club based on the last few campaigns. But, due to how close it is in that middle section of the league, they’re still in with a great chance of making it to the Championship Round.

Mechelen vs Genk Preview
League leaders Genk are under immense pressure to hold on to the top spot in the Pro League, as they are being chased down by reigning champions Club Brugge. They currently hold a one-point lead, but the situation could have looked so much better if not for some costly dropped points in recent weeks.
The most obvious being the 2-0 defeat to Club Brugge in mid-December, as well as a 2-2 draw with Antwerp over the Christmas period. If it were not for Club Brugge’s own dropped points in December – a 2-2 draw with Union Saint-Gilloise – then we might already be talking about how Genk let a comfortable lead slip through their hands. As it stands, their destiny is still in their own hands, but the last nine fixtures of the regular season are likely to have further twists and turns.
In the middle of the table, where Mechelen currently resides, there is still much to be decided. Mechelen are 9th, without a win in five league matches (two draws, three defeats) but are still only just four points away from Gent in 6th.
If they can arrest this untimely slump in form, they’ve got a decent chance of sneaking into the Championship Round for the first time since their promotion to the Pro League in 2019. Unfortunately for Mechelen, the points they’ll need to move them up the table are unlikely to come this weekend when facing Genk.
