Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg last Sunday secured yet another Bundesliga title for Bayern Munich.
Alonso’s men have lost just two top-flight matches all season, but 11 draws is the primary reason why the 2023-24 champions have fallen short.
But the aforementioned result in Freiburg was a huge boost for Dortmund following their 4-0 thrashing of Wolfsburg the previous day, with Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi each netting braces.
Fifth-placed Dortmund are now just a point behind Freiburg and the skirmish for the final Champions League place is set to dominate the Bundesliga narrative across the last two matchdays.
Freiburg travel to relegation candidates Holsten Kiel this weekend, so Dortmund may very well need to win in Leverkusen – which is one of the harder tasks in German football these days.
Kovac’s side also rank 12th in the Bundesliga away form table, mustering only five wins in 16 previous trips.
However, two of those wins have come in the last three away matches, with victories at Freiburg and Hoffenheim sitting either side of a respectable 2-2 draw at Bayern.
Leverkusen have won only two of the last four on home soil too, so Dortmund and Kovac can feel quietly confident of pulling off what would be their biggest win of the season.

Sunday really is a meeting between the German top flight’s premier goalscoring machines, outside of Harry Kane. Like Guirassy, Schick has 19 goals in the Bundesliga this season, averaging 1.09 per 90 minutes. The Czech international has scored twice in the previous three matches and netted a brace in Leverkusen’s 3-2 win at Dortmund earlier in the season.
