Switzerland were then just minutes away from exiting the competition on Matchday 3, until a dramatic 92nd-minute goal by Riola Xhemaili against Finland.
That strike secured a 1-1 draw against Finland and sent them home instead, with Switzerland’s superior goal difference taking them through to the quarters.
Luck was on their side. However, the Swiss will know that they cannot rely on luck to stand any chance of getting near Spain.
