Ligue 1 – Marseille vs Paris FC: Match Preview

After a promising pre-season that seemed to bring much-needed stability, Olympique de Marseille suffered a frustrating defeat on the opening day of the season (1-0).

Despite playing with a man advantage for most of the match, Mason Greenwood and his teammates lacked intensity and creativity to break down Rennes’ low block, only to be punished on the counter late in the game. At Marseille, however, a single defeat can be enough to put all the hard work back into question.

The loss has already sparked tensions in the dressing room, with Jonathan Rowe and Adrien Rabiot reportedly coming to blows. Both players have been suspended from the team and expected to find a new club before the end of the transfer window..

Paris FC, freshly promoted to Ligue 1, also lost their opening game against Angers (0-1), though their performance was encouraging. The Parisians dominated possession and created numerous chances, but lacked precision in the final third and failed to take advantage of Mouton’s sending-off in the 60th minute.

Even though the trip to Marseille looks daunting, Stéphane Gilli’s men are expected to be highly motivated and could take advantage of the chaos currently surrounding the OM squad.

Ligue 1 – Marseille vs Paris FC: Predictions

Half-Time/Full-Time: Draw/Marseille @ 4.20
Roberto De Zerbi’s tactical style is now well known, and lower/mid-table teams don’t hesitate to drop deep and prioritise counter-attacks. Against Rennes, OM once again struggled to break down such defensive systems, an issue that was already there last season. Marseille may therefore find it tough to break through the Paris FC defence in the first half before asserting their dominance after the break.

Both Teams to Score – No @ 1.80
Paris FC haven’t scored in Ligue 1 for 46 years and are hoping to end that streak this weekend. Against Angers, they created several chances but lacked efficiency. Marseille, on the other hand, were hoping to welcome back Facundo Medina from suspension, whose aggressive style and impact were both sorely missed in the opener. Unfortunately, the Argentine defender injured his ankle in training this week and remains a doubt. De Zerbi will once again have to reshuffle his defence, which remains unconvincing despite the addition of new signing CJ Egan-Riley. The Parisians, including Maxime Lopez, a former OM player, will try to exploit the defensive weaknesses of the Olympians.

Marseille to Win and Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.98
Following last weekend’s loss and the Rowe-Rabiot incident, OM know they must deliver. In a sold-out Vélodrome, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and his teammates will be under pressure not just to win, but to win convincingly, otherwise they risk angering sections of their own supporters. Paris FC will certainly fight hard, but Marseille’s superior squad depth – especially in attack – should ultimately prove decisive.
