Club Brugge’s 2-1 first-leg win was a bit of a shock given they have been far from at their best of late.
After a long unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, Hayen’s men have won only one of the last four domestic matches.
However, one of those draws (1-1 vs Genk) saw Club Brugge progress to yet another Croky Cup final.
But the 2-2 draw at STVV last weekend has now seen them fall eight points behind Genk in the table, which places more emphasis on this crucial fixture.
If Club Brugge fail to hold onto their lead, questions will be raised about the capabilities of the team ahead of the Championship Play-Offs in Belgium.
Atalanta are not in great form themselves, though. A 0-0 home draw with Cagliari was far from ideal preparation for this match and star man Ademola Lookman is still struggling with a knee injury.
The winger’s absence in the first leg was evident for all to see and if the Nigerian is unable to play a part again, the Club Brugge defenders will be very happy indeed.
To borrow a cliche, this game could very well be decided by the first goal. If Atalanta come flying out the traps and take the lead, it could be a long night for the visitors.
But if Club Brugge grab the opener and extend their advantage, the pressure may well get to the home side and result in them crashing out of European competition.
