USG vs Olympique de Marseille: match preview

After a spectacular victory against PSV Eindhoven (1-3) in their first Champions League match, Union Saint-Gilloise then suffered three consecutive defeats against Newcastle (0-4), Inter Milan (0-4) and Atlético Madrid (3-1).

On the previous matchday, the Belgians secured a valuable win at Galatasaray to move back into the top 24, which they are only missing out on due to goal difference.

In the league, David Hubert’s men are still leaders but have been performing inconsistently.

OM, for their part, are also going through a difficult period. The Marseillais, contenders for the French championship title, have lost valuable points in Ligue 1, as illustrated by their latest defeat against Lille (1-0).

In the Champions League, Roberto De Zerbi’s men are coming off a great performance against Newcastle (2-1), which allows them to continue dreaming of a place in the play-offs.

Marseille will face a familiar opponent, as it was against Union Saint-Gilloise that OM played its first European match in 1962, in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

USG vs Olympique de Marseille: predictions

OM to beat USG – 2.35

Olympique de Marseille has a significantly larger and overall superior squad to USG, both in terms of depth and individual quality. Despite their inconsistency in Ligue 1, Marseille have shown in the Champions League that they can raise their game when it matters. Against a Union side that is sometimes fragile defensively, OM start with a slight advantage.

Mason Greenwood to score at any time – 2.50

Although he has been quiet in recent games, Mason Greenwood remains one of OM’s most dangerous attacking players. His work rate and ability to create chances suggest that he is close to rediscovering his form and expressing his talent in big games. Against a Brussels defence that concedes regularly, the context seems ideal for a return to the scoresheet.
